PROVIDING EXTENDED SUPPORT POST SCHOOL FOR YOUNG WOMEN ACROSS OUR TIMARU COMMUNITY

Teen Parents in our School

A safe and nurturing environment for young parents

For teen parents in our community, we provide a safe, non-judgemental and nurturing environment for young parents to study and complete their education

Our students are dual-enrolled through Timaru Girls’ High School and Te Kura Correspondence School to help tailor a progamme to meet their learning needs.

What to expect

Students choose to study a mix of online and in-class courses with a personalised learning plan. The Co-Ordinator works alongside theme to help access both academic and personal support as part of this plan based alongside our Careers team and Guidance counsellor in the Whare Whakamanawa (Wellbeing Hub).

We offer a place of wraparound support for the student acknowledging their responsibilities and challenges while also celebrating their achievements,  both as a student and as a parent, in their journey to further their education. This offers a second chance at education providing better opportunities for success.

What do our students have to say?

This has helped me with furthering my education and meeting other mums in a similar situation to me. Its nice to come here and talk through with other mums about the children’s development while being in a safe environment for schooling

Being able to study means I can provide a better life for my son and show him that getting your education is important. Having a place to go where I can focus on my study provided by Timaru Girls’ High School means I am able to show and provide for him to better his future

.... I can finish my NCEA level 3 and get my University Entrance credits. This means that after I finish school I will be able to go to uni and get a degree and provide a better life for my son and I. Having the study space gives me a quiet place to learn and finish my school work and being at a proper school if I need any help with my subjects I can go see a teacher or join in on the students learning classes

Being at Timaru Girls’ High is amazing because I can get my work done and we have the Girls High staff there to also help us with a subject if we need them to. Being here has changed our lives for the better and has us becoming better mothers to our children
